For Our Sisters by Vela she is your mother, she is your daughter, your sister, wife, cousin, granddaughter, she is your aunt, niece, partner, your friend what if she never came home again? if she disappeared imagine all your fears and if she were found wouldn't you move the whole damn world, just to go get her and if she died, wouldn't you be tempted to get revenge, even though you know better if she cried wouldn't you notice? needed help wouldn't you care? wouldn't you be there? how to understand cruelty by our fellow man our society is to blame why do we allow this shame? how many Indigenous women will go missing before you listen? how many Indigenous women will be lost before you listen? First Nations, Metis, Innu Aboriginal, Inuit, me, you, every human being is a miracle, has a dream no one should ever take a life away and how are we each complicit every day? we need change right now stop asking when or how the change begins when you dare to care for women here, there, everywhere she is your mother, she is your daughter, your sister, wife, cousin, granddaughter, she is your aunt, niece, partner, your friend what if she never came home again? if she disappeared imagine all your fears and if she were found wouldn't you move the whole damn world, just to go get her and if she died, wouldn't you be tempted to get revenge, even though you know better the change begins when you dare to care.

Canadian pOILitics by Vela & Josh Myles Oh Canada, how can we be proud Your behaviour on Climate Change should not be allowed We’re tired of all these Fossil Awards You don’t speak for us, that’s not the future we fight for Why won’t Canada help to lower emissions? Follow the money to understand these decisions Who has got our government’s ear? It’s a slick Oil Lobbyist, using money and fear Chorus 1: We need to kick the Oil Industry Off of Indigenous Territory! Meanwhile tar sands – Expansion Dirty and carbon – Intensive Causing widespread – Destruction Disrespecting Indigenous Rights and Lands Looks like islands are sinking While the ice melts, our earth is bleeding Flooded in fever, some places burning Heart and sky lungs, erratic breathing Like ACFN* – Jackpine mine Aamjiwnaang - Line 9 pipeline Fort Nelson River – Frickin’ Fracking Unis’tot’en – Cabin Fever Chorus 1: We need to kick the Oil Industry Off of Indigenous Territory! Chorus 2: 1.The Resistance / To this Existence Its beautiful / Its joyful 2. La Résistance / à cette existence Nous avons des choix / élevons nos voix 3.The Resistance / To this Existence We’ve got choices / Raise our voices 4.La Résistance / à cette existence Gardons la joie / et on y va! *ACFN = Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation

Inappropriate Hugs - by Vela, Jan 2013 Have you ever noticed We tend to hug on the right Like we’re afraid of heart to heart A connection to ignite When you hug on the left Your heart chakras align Don't be afraid of the honesty Share the energy & you'll be fine Chorus1: Inappropriate hugs 'cuz they last too long Inappropriate hugs Might last for this whole song x2 Have you ever noticed We don't talk about much Like we’re afraid to let our mask fall Or have a conversational touch When you talk about the weather Too rainy, too humid, too hot, too cold You forget about your Big Dreams That your future been bought n' sold Chorus 1 Bridge: And would it be so wrong If they lasted for the whole song Why is this upsetting? You're forgetting That we're all connected anyways Bound up in boundaries, Oh No! We're not talkin' 'bout awkward hugs Like when you hug in the car Or that creepy stranger Or your holding bike or guitar So reach out and hug someone But don't molest them Hugs can even be sexual As long as they're consensual Chorus 2: Inappropriate hugs 'cuz they're just too real Inappropriate hugs In touch with how you feel Chorus 1 Inappropriate hugs 'cuz they last too long Inappropriate hugs Might last for this whole song

about

This is a demo album with the tracks I've released over the past year. My songs shine an unflinching light on topical issues, from climate change to missing & murdered Indigenous women to social alienation. I love collaborating & co-creating exhilarating harmonies and soundscapes. I also revel in the delicious ridiculousness of life! I hope these songs nourish you and inspire you to keep working - with joy - towards the future we want.

I'm looking forward to creating a full length Album. Stay tuned!

Keep Shining Bright,
Vela.

about

Vela Ottawa, Ontario

My singer-songwriter name is Vela, "candle". The candle is a symbol of hope. A candle casts a warm healing light. It lights up dark places. Even a modest candle can ignite a bonfire of change.

My songs shine an unflinching light on topical issues. I also revel in the delicious ridiculousness of life. I love co-creating exhilarating harmonies and soundscapes to share with you, dear listener.
