Get the Oil out of Canadian Politics! Canadian pOILitics was created to offer solidarity and support to Indigenous Communities fighting to protect their land from the voracious Oil Industry, especially Tar Sands Industry. It is by Non-Indigenous people who feel we need to work together for Ecojustice. Four Indigenous communities are highlighted in the lyrics: Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN), Aamjiwnaang,Fort Nelson River, and Unis’tot’en, but there are many, many others to applaud and support! The original song was written while Canadian representatives "participated" at the 2011 UN climate change summit (COP 17) in Durban, South Africa.
I won't make you pay for this music. I am asking you. Every dollar is a vote, "Yes! Do that again!" If you like what my friends and I do, here is the equation: your support ($, love, dark chocolate, etc) = we can make more music ♥
lyrics
Canadian pOILitics
by Vela & Josh Myles
Oh Canada, how can we be proud
Your behaviour on Climate Change should not be allowed
We’re tired of all these Fossil Awards
You don’t speak for us, that’s not the future we fight for
Why won’t Canada help to lower emissions?
Follow the money to understand these decisions
Who has got our government’s ear?
It’s a slick Oil Lobbyist, using money and fear
Chorus 1:
We need to kick the Oil Industry
Off of Indigenous Territory!
Meanwhile tar sands – Expansion
Dirty and carbon – Intensive
Causing widespread – Destruction
Disrespecting Indigenous Rights and Lands
Looks like islands are sinking
While the ice melts, our earth is bleeding
Flooded in fever, some places burning
Heart and sky lungs, erratic breathing
Like ACFN* – Jackpine mine
Aamjiwnaang - Line 9 pipeline
Fort Nelson River – Frickin’ Fracking
Unis’tot’en – Cabin Fever
Chorus 1:
We need to kick the Oil Industry
Off of Indigenous Territory!
Chorus 2:
1.The Resistance / To this Existence
Its beautiful / Its joyful
2. La Résistance / à cette existence
Nous avons des choix / élevons nos voix
3.The Resistance / To this Existence
We’ve got choices / Raise our voices
4.La Résistance / à cette existence
Gardons la joie / et on y va!
*ACFN = Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation

My singer-songwriter name is Vela, "candle". The candle is a symbol of hope. A candle casts a warm healing light. It lights
up dark places. Even a modest candle can ignite a bonfire of change.
My songs shine an unflinching light on topical issues. I also revel in the delicious ridiculousness of life. I love co-creating exhilarating harmonies and soundscapes to share with you, dear listener....more
Words cannot express the wonder-fullness. Kevin's voice & guitar are sublime, the lyrics will indeed lighten & enlighten. So listen, download, & feel the good vibes ♥ Vela
